Beautiful Burgundy: The Color I'm Leaning Into This Fall

It started with my closet, honestly. Burgundy is the color I reach for every fall — a silk skirt, a soft sweater, something that just feels like the season. This year I wanted that same warmth at home, so I started layering it into our rooms the way I would into an outfit: a piece here, a layer there, nothing matching too perfectly.

If you add burgundy in one place, make it a lamp. Lamplight is the fastest way to warm a room for fall, and a colored base carries the season even in the daytime when the light is off.

I pulled two I love. The brass-and-burgundy lamp has a ceramic shade and a little glow of metal at the base — soft and pretty on a nightstand or an entry table. The deep burgundy ceramic lamp is the moodier of the two, the kind you'd set on a console or flanking a bed as a pair.

Either one earns its place all year, which is what makes a lamp worth the spend. You buy it for fall and keep it for good.

Layer it in a few more places

Once you have the anchors, burgundy is easy and fun to layer. This is where you can add as much as you like — a warm-toned throw over the sofa, a burgundy pillow in the mix, a candle, a few taper candles for the table, all the way to a whole color-drenched room.

None of it has to match exactly. A few different burgundy and berry tones in the same family look wonderful layered together, so trust your eye and layer freely.

Where I'd start

If you're adding burgundy for the first time, start with one lamp and the little bud vase. That's a warm, easy way in, and it costs almost nothing to try.

If you already love it, carry it through the house: add the berry bowl in the kitchen, the teapot on the coffee bar, a throw and a pillow in the living room, or let it drench a whole room in color. Spread across a few spaces, one warm color ties the house together from fall into the holidays.
